What does a backflow preventer do?

All commercials buildings and many residential homes have backflow preventers.These devices protect both the building occupants and the general public from contaminated water flowing back into the potable water supply system. Although the likelihood of this happening is low, documented cases have occurred causing illness and even death.

Backflow prevention devices are required to be inspected and tested each year. Devices located on the main water supply line where it enters the building are called containment devices and fall under the jurisdiction of the City Water Department. Devices that service specific appliances or equipment are called isolation devices and fall under the jurisdiction of the local plumbing department.
