• For your city water supply, a booster pump is a pump which will increase the pressure of the water supply for your home or your irrigation system.
• Booster pumps are generally found in areas where the city water pressure is considered low.

How Does a Booster Pump work?

• A booster pump consists of a pump and an expansion tank. The pump is installed in the main water supply line.
• When a booster pump runs it pumps water into the expansion tank where it compresses an opposing volume of air, hence increasing the pressure.
• Once the pressure reaches a desired set point the pump shuts off.
• This increase in pressure is stored in the expansion tank until there is a demand for water such as a faucet being turned on.
• When the pressure drops below a certain point the pump turns back on and repeats the cycle.

Do booster pumps increase flow?

• Booster pumps don’t necessarily increase water usage but they do increase the flow rate of water.

How do you install a pressure pump? 

• Pressure or booster pumps are installed in the main water supply line.
• The main water line is routed into the pump and the discharge pipe is plumbed into an expansion tank with a “tee”.
• Electrical power is used to operate the pump and the pump controls.
• The system pressure is monitored to tell the pump when to kick “on” and “off”.
• The pump manufacturer will supply their recommended installation directions. Care must be taken to follow the directions correctly for the system to work properly.
