This depends on several factors including whether it was installed correctly and the water quality. However, the average life of a water heater is believed to be 14 years. 

What size water heater do I need?

Many factors can go into sizing a water heater.

• How Many people live in the home?
• How much time is between each bath or shower?
• What other fixtures in your home use hot water?
• How long are your showers?
• How many gallons per minute are your shower needs?

A good rule of thumb is do you run out of hot water now? If so, you will want to increase the size accordingly.

For an endless supply of hot water consider upgrading to a tankless water heater.

What are the signs your water heater is going out?  

Leakage is the most common sign. If you run out of hot water faster than normal, if the temperature doesn’t seem as hot as it used to be, or if you hear strange noises coming from your heater (rumbling noises) it may be time to replace it.
